Thanks!
We're happy to have you on board!
These simple, DIY cross-stitch gift tags are a wonderful addition to any present. With some chipboard, your favorite color embroidery floss, and the Fiskars Thick Materials punch, you will have adorable and personalized tags in no time.
Before you get started, don't forget to download and print the alphabet template onto plain computer paper.
1. Use the large Tag Thick Materials Punch to punch out your tag shapes. The tags will measure 2´´ x 1 1/4´´ and you can get 20 tags from each 8 1/2´´ x 11´´ sheet of chipboard. These punches work perfectly because they are designed to punch through a variety of thick materials, like this chipboard.
2. Use the 1/4´´ Heart Hand Punch to punch heart shaped holes at the top of the tags. Of course you can use a regular circle punch, or any other shape – but these little heart punches will make the tags special and unique.
3. From the alphabet pattern, cut out the individual letter you would like to use for your tag. Center the letter on the tag and adhere using a piece of washi tape. In preparation for the piercing needed, stack 4 small pieces of felt together to serve as the base. The felt behind the tag makes it easy to pierce the holes without nicking your table in the process.
4. With your tag on top of the felt, use a thumb tack to pierce each sewing hole. Press the thumb tack through the pattern and the chipboard at the tip of each "X" arm. Where two "X's" intersect, you only need to pierce one hole, as you will actually be sewing each "X", connecting them. Having the holes created in the tag before you sew makes the process much easier and quicker.
5. The next step is to cross-stitch your letter with embroidery floss. Most embroidery floss comes with 6 strands, so separate the floss into 3 strands, as 6 is too thick for this project. Work your way across the letter sewing each "X" on the tag. If you get lost in the design, refer back to the pattern. Tie a knot on the back when you are finished with your stitching.
Your DIY tag is now complete! To finish your gift, consider wrapping the package with a wide strip of cardstock that matches the embroidery floss. Finally, wrap around the cardstock with gold twine at least 6 times, and add the cross-stitch gift tag before tying the knot.
