DIY Wooden Plant Stand Tutorial

Mid-century modern is one of my favorite design styles and I am always on the lookout for pieces that fit this aesthetic. The problem is, since this style has become so trendy, the prices for pieces in this design realm have skyrocketed! That's why I wanted to try making one on my own.

This DIY is a simple project that can add color and life to any room. Find a stain you like, a pot that fits your style, a plant you love and you're done!

Steps to Making a DIY Wooden Plant Stand

1. Cut wooden dowels. Start with three wooden dowels measuring 48" in length. Measure 11" from the top of each wooden dowel using the Fiskars® Tape Measure. Mark the measurement with a piece of tape to help you achieve a straight cutting line. Place the dowels on a work bench and clamp in place. Use the Fiskars® Precision Hand Saw to cut along the edge of the tape at the 11" mark. You will now have three dowels measuring 11" and three dowels measuring 37". As a guide, your smaller dowels should be about 3" taller than the height of your plant pot.

2. Drill holes in the dowels. Place the largest drill bit, which measures 3/16", in the Fiskars® Precision Hand Drill. Mark the center of the cut end of each of the six wooden dowels and drill through the center. Use the flute on the drill bit as a depth guide. Stop drilling when you reach the top of the flute.

3. Drill holes in the 37" dowels. Working with the 37" dowels only, measure and mark 8" from the bottom end – the end opposite the cut end that we just drilled into. Drill a hole all the way through the dowel using the 3/16" drill bit. Repeat for all three 37" dowels.

4. Drill holes in the 11" dowels. Place the smallest drill bit, which measures 3/32", in the drill. Place one of the 11" dowels on the work bench and clamp in place to hold. Measure and mark 6" down from the cut end and 8" down from the cut end. These two marks must be in alignment, one right over top the other, two inches apart. Drill two pilot holes in the dowel to a depth of 1/2". Do not drill all the way through the dowel. Repeat for all three 11" dowels.

5. Sand and stain the dowels. Sand the dowels using a sanding block then apply stain. We used a walnut stain applied with a cloth. Allow to dry.

6. Cut the copper wire. Use the Fiskars® Precision Hand Saw to cut a 3" length of copper wire. Cut 3 pieces of copper wire in this way to end up with three 3" pieces.

7. Hammer the copper wire into the dowels. Hammer one 3" piece of copper wire into the hole in the top of each 37"dowel. Then hammer the shorter dowels to the top of the copper wire. Hammer until there is about 1 " of copper wire visible. You will now have one leg made of one long dowel on the bottom, a piece of copper in the middle, and a shorter dowel on top. Repeat this until you have all three legs.

8. Drill holes in the plant pot. Drill three sets of two holes at equal intervals around the pot. The holes should be 2" apart to match the holes you drilled in the shorter dowels. Use the 1/8" drill bit for this task.

9. Screw the plant pot to the legs. Place the screws on the inside of the pot through the holes you just drilled. Align the holes with the pilot holes you drilled in step 4. Use the Fiskars® Precision Screwdriver to attach the plant pot to the legs through all six holes.

10. Finish the plant stand. Cut three lengths of copper wire each measuring 18" using the Fiskars® Precision Hand Saw. Bend 1/2" at each end. Insert the bent ends into the holes at the bottom of each leg and tap in with the hammer. Glue in place if necessary. This will secure your plant stand legs together for more stability. Add you plant on top and enjoy!
