If you have an unused space in your yard, it's time to think creatively. A spiral rock garden can be a relaxing addition and provide you with a peaceful place to get away after a long day of work.
Here’s how you can make a unique rock garden to add texture and style to your yard.
Step 1
Planning is key for this project. Start by sketching a spiral design to visualize the end garden. Next, make sure the size and scope of this project fit your area, giving enough space for the rock garden without demolishing your entire yard!
Step 2
Trace a circular area in your yard using a Fiskars garden spade. This outline will allow you one last check to ensure the diameter of the rock garden is the right size for your yard and will give you the perimeter of your project in which to work.
Step 3
You'll want a smooth top layer of dirt to act as the foundation for your rock garden.
First, clear out the project area using a Fiskars shovel and pick to loosen the grass and top layer of soil and place the loosened grass and dirt in a wheelbarrow to remove from the project site. Then, even out the new soil using the back of the shovel, and pat down into place by walking on top of the area. Consider using a Fiskars transfer shovel as a helpful aid in1 removing the unearthed grass and soil.
Step 4
Once the area is cleared and patted down into place, roll out a weed-resistant guard to help prevent any weeds from growing up in between your rocks and any ornamental plants you may want to add. Cut the mat to size using a Fiskars shears and secure into the ground with nails and a Fiskars general use hammer.
Step 5
Now that your mat is in position, place your selected ornamental rocks, such as river rocks, in a spiral pattern starting at the center and spiraling outwards. You can use your creativity in this step and design whatever pattern you like best.
Step 6
Place succulents, herbs or any decorative plants that grow well in your area randomly along the spiral. This gives a softer look to the rock garden and adds some greenery back into the mix.
Step 7
Cut out holes in the weed guard where your plants will be positioned using a Fiskars garden knife. Be sure not to cut too large of a space for weeds to grow through.
Step 8
Dig out holes deep enough for your plants using either Fiskars digging shovel or grip trowel, depending on the size of the plants you have selected.
Step 9
Fill in the areas where the mat can be seen with pea stone—being careful not to crush the newly-planted succulents—using the transfer shovel. This will provide you with a smooth surface on which to walk or sit.
Step 10
Rake the pea stone smooth using the Fiskars garden rake, and water the plants. Add in some decorative candles and meditation and you'll be ready to enjoy your relaxation rock garden!
