How-to guide for the StaySharp Max Reel Mower

by Marty Ross

Reel mowers are the environmentally friendly way to take care of a small lawn—and they're great for quick trimming around lawns of any size. They never need gas or oil, they are easy to maintain and store, they're quiet and the scissors-sharp blades give the lawn a tidy, hand-done cut.

How-to guide for the StaySharp Max Reel Mower

The StaySharp™ Max Reel Mower is a 21st-century design with advanced technology: it's easy to push and very efficient. It only takes a few minutes to get started: attach the handle, screw the knob onto the height-adjustment lever, and you're ready to mow. Here are a few tips for putting your reel mower to work—but be prepared for interruptions. The neighbors will want to give your brand-new reel mower a whirl, too.

The right height

The rule of thumb for mowing any lawn is to cut off about 1/3 of the height of the grass. The assumption is that you'll cut your lawn once a week during the growing season. In most cases, you should cut the grass to about 3½ inches tall, so set the height-adjustment lever to a notch or two under four inches. If grass clippings are not flying satisfactorily out the front of the mower as you walk along, adjust the mowing height down another notch. You don't need tools to make the adjustment, and it only takes a second to move the lever to the desired setting.

Get going

The mower is designed to be easier to push than other reel mowers. Grip the handle with your hands on the sides, not on top. The handle position should be at about waist height. You should be able to stand up straight as you mow along. As you push the mower, the handle will rise a few inches. You'll also notice that you naturally push the handle down as you pivot through turns.

Keep it tidy

Design features make all the difference in the mower. The inset wheels let you trim neatly along pathways. To cut right up to the edge of flowerbeds, walk with the left side of the mower closest to the bed and with the chain-drive mechanism on the right.

Keep it clean

To prevent rust and keep your reel mower in top condition, wipe the blades off with a rag if they are wet after you mow, and lubricate all the moving parts once a year. Spray a little silicone-based lubricant on the cutting-height adjustment mechanism. You should also spray the rear wheel bearings, the cutting-reel bearings, and on either side of the bar that supports the front wheels.

Space saver

This mower also has a small footprint that leaves plenty of room in the garden shed for other tools and supplies. After you finish mowing, push the mower into its spot and tilt the handle forward. When it's time to mow again, tilt the handle back into position and you're ready to roll. You might even decide to wake up early on Saturday to mow before the neighbors are up. Go ahead – they won't hear a thing.
